Ishimwe Ivan is a smart and happy boy. His favorite learning areas in class are literacy and drawing. Outside the classroom, Ivan can be seen racing friends or swinging. His favorite color is white, and he loves gorillas. Ivan stays with his parents, one older brother Fabie, and one older sister Niyonkuru Sharom,  who all attend Hope Haven. Ivan comes from a poor family.  His dad works at Hope Haven as a gardener, while his mother is a housewife. His mother serves in Hope Haven farming fields as an alternative way of paying school fees. The family rents a simple mud house.
